One thing sets a coffee corner apart from every other spot in the house, and it decides what works there.
Here you stand right up against it
Wall art in a living room is seen from the other side of the room. At a coffee corner you stand half a metre away, waiting for the machine to finish, every morning again.
That turns the rule around. Big, bold shapes are wasted here — you cannot take them in at a glance. What does work:
- Text. At reading distance a quote is legible, and reading distance is exactly where you are standing.
- Fine detail. An illustration with plenty to see does not flatten out here, because you have the time to look at it.
Quotes, because you can read them
Text on a wall is nowhere better placed than here. You are standing still, you have nothing to do, and you read it anyway.
Find something still bearable on the hundredth morning — a stricter requirement than it sounds. Start with typography and quotes.
Or an illustration with plenty to see
The second route is imagery with detail in it. That works better here than in a living room, for the same reason as the quote: up close there is something left to discover. Have a look at the illustrations.
Or your own photos
The third route is personal. A coffee corner is a place you pause every day, which makes it exactly the place for photos you feel something about.
Two forms: a photo collage of many photos side by side, or a photo enlargement of one moment. With a collage you can also get away with small photos here — at this distance you see all of them.
Where exactly do you hang it?
Three practical points:
- Beside the machine, not above it. You still have to reach past it with a full jug, and you keep it clear of the splash zone.
- At eye level, no higher. This is decoration to look at while standing, not a way of filling the empty wall above a cupboard.
- Small is allowed. The cards come in 10x10 cm and 20x20 cm, and the size grows with the number of them. A single 10x10 card is already a piece, and a narrow strip between two cupboards works as well as a wall-filling one.
